Where there is smoke...

Rake's Journal Entry #2

Everyone was waiting for us at logging basecamp. Many were wounded. Most were not warriors. I was lucky to have companions I had. They fight well, all of them.

I feel bad for Mrs. Cadderly. Tried so hard to save Mr. Cadderly, but in the end we failed. Her and him. Blood is on our hands as much as goblins. I will make them pay.

We helped lead survivors to Jarinsfall. Some were taken by goblins…not good. I was nervous. Walk slumped over to hide size. Wear cloak hood up. Trying to blend in if possible. Goblins least of my worries. We met guards from outpost. No one I recognized. This is good, but I hear them call us dirty monsters as they walk with us. I fought urge to hurt them very much.

We get to Jarinsfall. Are led to small chamber where a meeting is taking place. Zammern is now Mayor! New guard captain looks like good man. Better than Zammern but that doesn’t say much. Zammern hates us, ignores us, tells us to be quiet. I’ve kill more greenskins than’s he ever seen! I’ve fought for my life, claws, teeth, axes bared! What does he do? He hides behind walls! Sends men to die! But now he claims he has a plan to kill greenskins.

We’re taken to guard captain’s house where we’re watched. Captain comes back, tells us Zammern is going to lead soldiers himself to kill goblins, save captives, and take glory! I hope he dies in the woods. Captain says he can get us out of town in the morning to go into the woods and get ahead of Zammern. To kill greenskins. I like this idea. No one gets hurt except greenskins, and no one can find reason to arrest us, or me, as long as I don’t make trouble.

Plan is made to sneak out of town in the night. I don’t agree. This will only get us in trouble if we are caught, and if anyone recognizes who I am, I will never leave Jarinsfall. But we find Mrs. Cadderly and she gets us out of town. We go far before resting, and are well ahead of Zammern by morning.

We get back to goblin camp, kill many greenskins, and save captives. Send them to safety before entering mine at back of camp. Kill more goblins. Find dwarf and strange door. Mechanical man, Jon, says he can learn more about door before it is opened, but it will take time. Since then, I write Zammern a nice note, and this entry.

Treasure attained: 700sp, 60gp

Amulet of Protection +1

Sgt. Sacgrat’s Diary, 4 bottles of Goblin Wine, 12 bottles of Ale, Cadderly’s Payroll box (812gp)

XP Gained (per person): 385

Conclusion:

After the company’s bold night time escape from Jarinsfall, thanks in no little part to the bold actions of Lilnas Cadderly, and their stealthy maneuvering ahead of Harol Zammern’s war band; the band made a second assault on the Goblin encampment on the east side of the Venomtail River. The group discovered that the remaining goblins were thrown into disarray after the Chieftain’s death. The goblin Sergeant, Sacgrat, kept a log of the numbers of goblins that abandoned the mine. Mostly fleeing in groups of two or three, the last deserters were making a raid on the bridge in hopes to get back to the other side of the River.

Unbeknownst to the deserters but well known to the group, the Jarinsfall hunting band was slowly making their way northward to the mine. If the stories of the mysterious Commander Dargaan are to be believed, the xenophobic town leader poses not only a threat to any goblins he runs into but perhaps also to the humanoid adventurers as well.

To make things even worse, the dwarf captive, Dhorm, tells the group a story of another budding mystery. The goblins seem to have stumbled upon an ancient burial site within the mountain. The sergeant brought the dwarf into the mine in the faint hope he could open the door. Dhorm was unable to but has told the group that the mountainside the goblins were tunneling through seemed to be loose stone that had collapsed to fill open chambers, which would explain the carved door that stands within the heart of the mountain.

With Harol and his men quickly closing in behind you, the lure of a mystery spurs Jon Newman to begin an arcane ritual under the glow of a sunrod. Hoping to decipher the ancient and forgotten Draconic dialect carved upon the stone portal…

Conclusion of 1st meeting

Treasure attained:

200sp 100gp Gem 100gp Brooch 180gp

Bracers of Respite +2 (Rake claimed) 2 Potions of Cure Light Wounds

Orgzoch’s diary

XP Gained (per person): 360

Conclusion:

The group’s luck did serve them well that the larger goblin force did not hear their attack while in the mountain hideout. Sadly, Jameson Cadderly’s unfortunate death the group has forced the group to return back to the main camp for the Twin Valley Company.

When the five of you make it back to the camp, you find a half a dozen survivors of the goblin attacks. These few are from different crews but most raced off into the woods and made their way back here. One of them, a burly logger with a nasty leg wound named Marcus tells you he was left behind by Lilnas Cadderly for your return and possibly any others that make there way back to the camp.

Marcus tells you of the attacks on the other crews, the stories are all similar to yours. An unprovoked ambush in the forest with some workers being taken as prisoner. He also tells you that Mrs. Cadderly left a day ago (about the same time you raided the goblin camp). and that she will what for you in Jarinsfall.

Orgzosch's Diary
Writings of the Goblin Chieftain

The worn diary has a defaced symbol of Tiamat blazoned on the cover, which has been covered with painted red feathers. The first third of the book’s pages have been torn or cut out. The new writings begin on the first blank page in scrawled common.

“Two dragonfaces wander into my land today. One half dead already, we give his life to the Black Goddess. She eagerly take him’s life and sweep body back to the human city.

Me, Orgzosch! Chief of the Red Feather Clan! question other dragonface. He half mad. He talk of lost cities in Mountains. He talk of treasure. Orgzosch want treasure but dragonface say treasure is across the Black Goddess. He mad. Red Feather’s not cross the Black Goddess. She kill those that try.

Dragonface say he can help Red Feathers cross her. Me have dream that night of the mountain of treasure. Me decide we not feed dragonface to Black Goddess, we use him to get treasure. Orgzosch be first Red Feather to cross the Black Goddess!”

The narrative continues on as this unnamed “Dragonface” builds what the Chieftain calls a “Water Wing”, the narrative seems to describe the construction of a large raft.

The next few entries are filled with pompous self praise as the Chieftain tells of the first two crossings then of the disastrous third crossing.

“Crashed! The Water Wing smash upon rocks, it’s magic is gone! Black Goddess take the fifty Red Feathers, she angry we cross her and she demand pay back. Red Feathers want to give dragonface to Black Goddess, me not let them. Him show us mountain and build us new Water Wing, thens we feed him to the Goddess.

Dragonface take Red Feathers to the mountain. We follow old road to the flat mountain with three peaks. We makes camp here.

Dragonface tells Orgzosch of the great treasure found on other side of mountain but says it cursed so we not make camp on there. dragonface want good fighters to take to other side of mountain, they go by small path that go around peak. Orgzosch too important to go to cursed path, me send fifteen strong Red Feathers with dragonface.

Red Feathers tell of a door in the mountain side, door has much bad magic but Red Feathers say dragonface make it safe but behind door was more magic, no Red Feather can go in. Dragonface go alone.

Dragonface never come back out.”

The rest of the book goes on to hint that whatever “magic” that lie behind this door repelled any goblin that tried to enter but the information is sketchy, it seems that the Chieftain never went to this door.

The diary goes on to explain of the mining the goblins were doing in the mountain, the Chieftain’s ignorant plan of tunneling through the mountain to get to this treasure and the lucky discovery of a rich silver vein.

The last few pages describe a different story, the silver vein seemed to dry up as quickly as it appeared and the last winter ravaged the goblin’s provisions this spring found the band on the border of starvation.

“Red Feathers want new Chieftain! Me already defeat three challenges. Now Glaxfo say him want to be chieftain! Red Feathers say there are big folk in the valley. That we go take them. Make them build new Water Wing. Make them dig in mountain for silver.

Me see some already be going down and stealing things without Orgzosch’s say so. Glaxfo steal a wagon from old woman when she not looking, he say she driving with sticks in wagon. Glaxfo want to eat donkey that he steal.

Me think maybe it time to go get big folk. Orgzosch feed Glaxfo to Black Goddess so she make us strong for fighting big folk”

Rake's Journal Entry #1

Work began like usual. Hauling lumber from wagon to the fire. Not hard work, but not fun work. Cadderly is good man to give such work, but I am growing bored quickly. Axes just hang from my belt, unused. They miss fighting. They would not have to wait much longer.

While waiting for next wagon, goblins came out of forest with shouts and screams. Axes were thirsty. The other camp members, the wood and metal man named Jon, the dragonman Sarjhan, the two Eladrin Miahdor and Caelynna, and the others joined me in fight. Even though I wanted so much to kill all the goblins myself, I was glad to have the others. There were many goblins, and I am just one man.

The goblins died quickly. The other camp members are good in a fight. Most survived, and many have good talents that make them useful in a fight. They are strong. The dragonman has a good head. Might be good leader, reminds me of Borfryst. The wood and metal man was smart too. Did much to keep me and the Eladrin girl on our feet during fighting. Eladrin man used magic. I don’t trust magic, but he seems to be good with it. Killed many goblins.

After fighting was over, I could hear more fighting coming from the main logging camp to the north. I ran. There could have been more goblins to kill. Sadly, they were all dead when I arrived. Some of my camp-mates came with me to kill. I like that. We were all very disappointed when we found all goblins dead, but happy to see loggers alive.

Found out, Cadderly was taken by goblins, and many were hurt. We brought fire camp together with logging camp. Cadderly’s wife took them to Jarinsfall. We didn’t go there, luckily. Eladrin man surprised me by looking for tracks. Didn’t think he could do that. But he and I searched together, and found trail where Cadderly was dragged away. Me, dragon man, wood and metal man, and Eladrins went after goblins. And Cadderly.

We chased goblins for a long time. They set an ambush for pursuers, and attacked. I was hit with many arrows and spears because I was scouting ahead, but they were goblins, and no one was going to fight them first but me. I was hit many times, and everything went black. Next thing, I opened my eyes, and Eladrin man, Miahdor is name, had bandaged me while allies killed goblins. Angry that stupid goblins had hurt me so much, I stood up, and ran as fast as I can, and attacked one of remaining goblins with all my strength. I saw my axes cut deep, and I saw fear in his vile, evil little eyes. I was happy. But I was happier when I leaned in, and using his own dirty tongue told him “the only mistake you made was letting me live.” He knew fear in that moment, and I knew joy.

All the goblins died then and we moved on. Found out the goblins got in wagon. Where do goblins get wagon? Followed wagon tracks into mountains and up mountain side. Made camp.

Next day I snuck ahead and saw the goblin camp. Hut in middle next to wagon guarded by two goblins, lots of trees, two big tents with many goblins making much noise. Revelry. Distasteful in goblins. They should only feel misery. Also, camp had mine entrance.

Group decided to sneak into trees nearest hut. Miahdor and his sister said they could “step” into the hut where we though Cadderly was. They would let us know if they need help. Otherwise, they break out while we break in and run away with Cadderly.

They needed help.

I ran to door, and attacked two guards. Hit one, missed other. Dragonman ran up, hit other one, and wood and metal man attacked one with his crossbow. Once guards were dead, I kill goblin inside watching door, and slip in. Goblin chief yells for everyone to stop or he will kill Cadderly who is tied to chair in hut. Bad.

Dragonman Sarjhan runs in, and blows his lightning breath at goblins. Very good idea but he misses. Gobling kills Cadderly. Very bad. Cadderly was innocent. He is not a goblin, he is not a Shifter. He is not a fighter. He is just a man. I am enraged, ashamed, and vengeful. Chief will pay.

After killing wolves in hut, and other goblins, chief tries to run away, but Jon the wood and metal man ran behind hut to stop him. It was unnecessary. I cut the chief down from behind before he can cut an an escape hole. I separated his head from his shoulders. I know joy.

As rest of group tries to open up goblin chief’s trunk, I carry Cadderly’s body out to wagon and wait for rest of group. We ride quickly back down mountain to camp. I don’t want to go to Jarinsfall, but loggers left behind to wait for us will likely want to go there. Zammern is not a goblin, but he is not an innocent. If I have to , I will finish what I started.

Humble beginnings...

Our five brave heroes are part of the charcoal crew working at the Southern base of a small un-named mountain in the Twin Valley. Each has found their way to this crew, some as part of their training some simply have no where else to go. But each are destined for greater things.

Their crew works with a companion logging crew working on the western face, closest to the Venomtail river, so the choice timber can be floated to the base camp. Three times a day, carts come in from the logging site with scraps for the charcoal crew.

The shifter, Rake Redclaw, is a Builder in the crew. His youth, vigor and unbridled strength make the unloading and unloading easier on the other builders.

The Eladrin siblings, Miahdor Silverblade and Caelynna Silverblade, along with the enigmatic construct, Jon Newman, are Watchers. The trio’s are specially suited for the task of monitoring the firing piles, since each works well of half the rest a normal made would need.

The Dragonborn, Sarjhan Thava of Clan Battlefist, is charged as the foreman of the firing crew. His position is unheard of for a first year crewman, but his charisma and his ability to bring together the myriad races on the crew lead Jameson Cadderly to pick the new hire for the job.

Along side these five are a few other workers, mostly men but the odd elf and dwarf. Today’s work begins like ever other since the Spring began. The weather is cool this morning but the long time workers know that the days of cool morning weather are going to be short lived.
